Nick unlocked the door, walking in and immediately striding across the small living space, yanking the curtains closed and throwing his bag down near the bed. He turned to address the others as they were walking in.

“We've got the room next door so as not to arouse suspicion, but I think with the way things are at the moment we all need to spend the night in the one room.”

Nick surveyed the space, paying particular attention to JJ, who'd tilted her head and rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly in an effort to avoid locking eyes with him. He carried on regardless.

“OK, then, it's settled. JJ, you gonna get set up?”

“Sure,” she replied.

JJ threw her bag on the bed and unzipped it, pulling out a heavy-duty laptop and various gadgets and gizmos. She powered on the computer, clicking away at the keys, flicking effortlessly through different programs, messing about with a multitude of wires and cables until she had everything she needed hooked up. Almost on cue, Robin walked through the door carrying two grocery bags, which he duly emptied onto the bed. Random unmarked white boxes of different shapes and sizes spilled out on to the bed, and JJ quickly went about opening and unpacking each one with the excitement of a small child at Christmas.

“And record some of it?” asked Robin.

“Exactly.”

“Look,” interrupted Clara, “I don't mean to be the negative one here, but wearing a wire? Isn't that the first kind of thing Boal is going to look for? I mean, he's pretty well-versed in spotting that kind of stuff. Surely if he smells a rat in any way, then it's game over?”

“Yeah you're right, which is why I'm kitting you guys out with minimalistic stuff. All digital, all with built-in wireless, so no wires that could be found. This stuff is pretty state-of-the-art too, built to withstand all but the most technologically advanced scanners. And before you ask, we're borrowing this, we have to give it back!”

“Good thing we're not up against the head of one of the most technologically advanced agencies in the U.S. government then, huh?” sniped Clara.

“Ex-head of one of the most technologically advanced agencies,” replied Nick. “These days I'd be surprised if Boal even has a cellphone subscription. The only way he's going to know we have this is if he sees it, and there's no way I'm meeting him anywhere where he'd get away with a frisk down without it looking suspicious.”

“Here,” said JJ, reaching out to Clara with a small black button-looking contraption in her hand. She gently took hold of Clara's jacket, sliding the contraption in behind the collar. “Now go take a look at yourself in the mirror.”

Clara walked into the small hotel room bathroom, pulling on the drawstring, the neon light flickering
